I just noticed that when I am trying to find a tag on Moms4mom, and key in the first letter of the word, for example the letter "n" then all tags containing the letter "n" show up. When I key in the letters "ne" then all tags that contain the letters "ne" within the tag show up. So I was thinking that after "newborns" would come other tags beginning with the letters "ne" like "newborn" "new-zealand" "new-enviroment" and "new-parents" (in order of usage frequency" This is not the case, is there a particular reason why "Tags" work in this way? When I key in a letter, why I can't I just see a list of all tags that begin with that letter? When I key in two letters, why can't I first see a list of all tags that begin with those letters? |

In the tags page, the algorithm is returning any tag with the sequence of letters you type, and then it's taking the results and sorting them by most frequent. It doesn't take into account whether those letters start at the beginning of the word or not. Does that answer the question? Yes thank you it does. Does it have to be that way?

Hi emination, you seem to have a good eye for noticing things that could be improved and things that don't feel quite right. We'd love it if you would come over to http://meta.osqa.net/ and raise this question there, so the various OSQA devs and other site admins would see and comment on it. This tag behavior is something that can be changed, but it would be best to have it discussed in an OSQA-focused context. I hope you'll join us there. You should be able to click "edit" on this question, copy the text, and paste it intact into a new question at the OSQA discussion. Thanks, Rick I think emination is talking about the tag behaviour on moms4mom the Stack Exchange site rather than on meta.moms4mom. Though of course the same question could be asked of an OSQA site.

Thanks, Rich - I had misunderstood. Nonetheless, we'd love to have emination's insights shared at meta.osqa.net any time! More is better.

@Rick Thanks for your answer! @Rich thanks for pointing out the fact that I was referring to the tags on moms4mom. (I thought I was quite clear about that in the first part of the question) I don't think there are enough tags on meta.moms4mom to comment on the "tag behavior" just yet.

Do you mean in the tags page: http://moms4mom.com/tags or in the question page when you tag a question?
Actually in a way it applies to both. The tags page is the way I have explained above. When writing a question and adding/choosing tags, entering 3 letters "new" lists all tags begining with "new", but is not the case when you enter the just the first 2 letters "ne".
