Do you believe in "Crying it out"?

The accepted and top-voted answer is short and to the point, but I feel it could be a little more well developed instead of just referring people to other articles. A short summary of those other articles would be terrific, and would make the answer an efficient way to understand the topic for parents who are trying to find their own style. I imagine this question might get more traffic than others, as it seems it would be a topic that applies to most new parents. The accepted answer could also be improved by adding a treatment of alternate viewpoints, although your answer, Scott, is second in votes and does just that.

I'll put some thought into improving my answer there. I'm not really satisfied with the title of the question either. It's quite subjective. Maybe it should be more along the lines of "should I let my baby cry it out" or what are the pros and cons, etc.

Ok, I updated the question title, my answer a bit, and bbrown's answer, just to include some choice quotes from those articles. Do you think that's good enough, or is there anything else?
